Op Art

5th grade has been finishing up the year by learning about and creating optical illusions.  We've learned several different methods of creating illusions and looked at the work of Bridget Riley and M.C. Escher.   The students seem to really enjoy this type of art.  Some students have even been making their own illusions at home and bringing notebooks full of their creations for me to see.

Pies and Masks

This past week, our school was treated to a visit by author Derek Munson, who wrote Enemy Pie.  The students created artwork and "recipes" for a great friendship to prepare for his visit.  Our school is filled with pies and chefs.

2nd graders have been making masks.  We looked at various masks from Africa and South America and then students created their own using a variety of different materials.  After finising, they made a sketch of their creations.  Here are some of the results:

Cooking Up a Great Friendship

In preparation of the visit from author, Derek Munson, students have been creating artwork inspired by the book Enemy Pie.  This is a wonderful children's book about how a boy learns from his dad how to turn his enemy into his friend.  During character education time the last few weeks, students have been writing "recipes" for a friendship pie.  We have also using our artistic skills to create pies and chefs to display with the recipes.  Here are some of the results:

Let it Snow!

To finish up our unit on weather art, Kindergarteners made these collages of themselves playing in the snow.  They coincide perfectly with the large snowfall that hit Northwest Indiana this week.

Check out our robot buddies made from all sorts of fun recycled materials.  These were made by students in Mrs. Darnell's class.

2nd Grade Multi-Media Sculptures

2nd graders have been working so hard the last 4 weeks to create these people.  We spent a week making hats, 2 weeks making beads and painting them, and another week making the clothing a face.  Today we finally got the whole thing assembled, and I'm so impressed with the results.  This idea came from something I saw a long time ago in a Crayola magazine, and then we expanded and added our own ideas.
