Empty Bowls Dinner

I am very excited to tell you about the upcoming Empty Bowls dinner.  This month in character education, students at Three Creeks are learning about community service.  In an effort to get kids involved in giving back to our local community, we will be participating in Empty Bowls.  Empty Bowls is a hunger awareness dinner that will take place on November 28 from 5:15-6:45 p.m. Students in all grades will be creating something for the event, ranging from clay bowls to placemats, to table decorations.  The dinner will include a simple meal of chicken noodle or potato soup and bread. Tickets must be purchased in advance: now through November 16.  Cost is $5 per person or $20 per family of 5. All proceeds will be donated to a local food pantry.  Three Creeks students and their families are invited to come.  Each family who attends will be able to take home one of the handmade bowls as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in our world.   There will be family art activities and music performances during the evening as well.

Junk Sculptures

The 4th graders have been making junk sculptures inspired by toys we looked at from Kenya.  In Kenya kids often make automobiles from bottles, caps, and scraps of wire that they find.  We used recycled treasures that had been stored up in the art room waiting to be used.  Here are some of their creations:

Trash is Cash

Fourth graders are learning about Kenya.  Many people in Kenya are using trash to create art that they can sell to provide income for their families.  Students are working on making their own artistic sculptures using trash such as empty containers, caps, and wood scraps.  Check out these 2 videos to see learn more about trash art and Kenyan culture.

Bubble Wrap Printing

 Kindergarteners had so much fun using bubble wrap to make circular prints.  This simple process involved painting the bubble wrap with a brayer and then printing it onto white paper.

 The first graders have been making sculptures inspired by Alexander Calder.  They had to start by painting styrofoam.  Look at all the colorful hands we had:

 This week we are finishing the sculptures by adding pipe cleaners and beads.  Here is what one looks like:

 And finally, the second graders are finishing up their Georia O'Keefe inspired flower prints while we wait for their clay pieces to dry and be fired in the kiln.  Take a look at their finished print collages below.

Pointillism

3rd graders have been making artwork filled with circles and dots.  We learned about the artist Seurat and his style of painting called pointillism.  Here are the beginnings of some of their pieces they created by dipping cotton swabs in paint:

Animal Shape Collages

The kindergarteners have been learning about shapes in art.  Recently we read some poems from the book Oodles of Animals by Lois Elhert and looked at the way she uses shapes to create animals.  Students then got to create their own animal using an assortment of patterned shapes.  Here are the results:
